So why is it that so few women decide to pursue a career as a magician? I mean I can understand back in the days of witch hunting that women would by burned at the stake for practicing magic. But those days are long gone so is it something about magic that women are not interested in? I personally don't get why having an X chromosome would deter anyone from performing magic.
What are a couple of advantages and disadvantages to being a female magician?
Disadvantage: Most every magic book is written from a mans perspective, and the clothing to hide a dove or other objects just doesn't work with a women's clothing like it would for a man in a suit jacket.
Advantage: As long as your good at magic and you have a likeable personality, you will be an instant star because your a minority.
Disadvantage: You basically need to be a model as well as a female magician, female singers have the same problem. So you really need to be comfortable in your own skin. You also need to be a great public speaker, it's not easy performing on stage. Many can perform closeup magic, but they have an extremely tough time once they step on a stage in front of a large audience.
Advantage: You always see super skinny models performing as magicians assistance, well for a female magician wouldn't it be amazing to see her saw a man in half? That would be a lot more impressive considering a muscular dude is much bigger!
Advantage: Unlike other entertainment fields such as actresses, where women typically make significantly less money. A female magician can charge whatever she feels her magic is worth. This is true for Male Magicians as well...you don't have to follow any guidelines for your pricing. You choose what your price is and it's up to you to decide whether to negotiate that price up or down based on clients needs.
My daughter Parker (age 11) is an aspiring magician and this is a very important topic for her to understand as she will face some challenges but it also presents her with a tremendous opportunity especially considering she is also a child magician!

One of my favorite women in to learn from is a Candaian Magician by the name of Ekaterina. She has a YouTube Channel where she does magic trick reviews, which are GREAT! Magicians need to know before they buy a new trick if it's going to be something that fits their style, can it be performed from all angles, is it a novice, intermediate, or advanced magic trick, how long does it take to reset, is the gimmick well constructed, etc. Ekaterina has hundreds of these videos with so much information and I frequently watch her posts.
Here's a little Biography about Ekaterina:
Ekaterina was born in Moscow, and developed an early interest in the Circus and the Entertainment Industry. When Ekaterina was eight years old, she immigrated to Quebec, and learned French and English. Beginning at the age ten, she began juggling balls and clubs, and later discovered her true passion when she received access to magic through the Internet. She purchased magic DVD's, practiced every day for hours on end, and soon began to perform in public.
Specializing in the art of card manipulation, often referred to as "flourishing", Ekaterina gained respect from other magicians for her skill, her flair and for making it look so easy. Ekaterina soon met with veteran magicians from around the world, who graciously helped her develop her career in show business, increase her venues and invitations to perform, and expand her expertise and wide variety of skills in the fine art of performing magic.
Today, Ekaterina is considered a rare and exotic female magician
by her peers, who loves her audience and makes sure that each person is left delighted and breathless. Ekaterina believes the true secret of magic is not about how good you are, but about how you make people feel. Moreover, she touches thousands of people with her magic through her web site and through online videos on Youtube. In addition to being a magician, Ekaterina is a professional
fashion model, and as CEO of her expanding firm, is responsible for many jobs, including Marketing, Event Management, developing an online educational series, and every now and then, International Relations.
